“Deeks?” Mary asked quietly as she opened his door. If the man was asleep, she didn’t want to wake him unnecessarily.
She listened with the door slightly ajar but heard nothing.
Slowly, she opened the door wider so she could look in without disturbing him. The bed was neatly made and Declan was nowhere to be seen.
“Boy’s been up since about four,” Samuels stated from the hallway behind, startling her.
“Oh my gosh!” she exclaimed as she grabbed her chest. “You scared me!”
“Sorry,” he professed as he entered the room as well. “I fell asleep by the fire last night. He woke me up and sent me to bed on his way out. Said he was going hunting.”
“I don’t know what he thinks he’s going to find,” she stated as she looked around his room. “The sound of gunfire just provokes the Deputy Provosts to do house to house searches. Did he sleep at all?” she asked. “This doesn’t even look slept in.”
The old man shrugged. “Given what we know about him after last night, he probably slept on the floor.”
As she stood in the middle of the room she had rented him, Mary happened to glance out the window. There, hanging from the header above the barn door, the pale light of morning afforded her the sight of Deeks cleaning a mule deer.
“What in the world? Is that…” she began to ask before her words trailed off.
Samuels leaned down and looked outside.
“How did he…” he began to ask before seeing the tearful happiness streaming down her cheeks.
“Looks like he started on that list already,” he observed.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why’s that?”
“I haven’t written anything down yet,” she replied.
The pair stood and stared out the window just watching him deftly work his knife. They were so filled with joy at the prospect of a protein and fat-laden meal consisting of something other than potatoes and boiled greens, they could barely contain themselves. As he spun the carcass, they could see that he had either field dressed the deer after bringing it down or gutted it somewhere nearby. Ultimately though, they were curious as to how he’d managed to harvest a deer and have it almost fully processed without them hearing a thing. Their idle thoughts were interrupted by the grumbling in their stomachs.
“Breakfast?” Samuels asked.
“Absolutely,” she declared with a childlike smile as she eagerly passed by him and entered the hallway. “Looks like we’re having a big fat venison steak!” she declared almost giddily. “You get the plates, Mr. Samuels. I’ll be out back thanking Deeks,” she directed as she made her way down the stairs.
“Yes, ma’am!” he replied, excited to have a robust gut-busting breakfast compliments of Declan Edward Wrigley.
Mary quickly flew through the house and bolted from the side door. She nearly fell as she crossed an unseen depression in the yard.
“Deeks!” she exclaimed. “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” she stated repeatedly as she rushed toward him.
The young man, lost in his work, looked up and stared at her confused.
“You have
